Using Writing in Environmental Education
William Dietrich*
This workshop will include lecture, student writing, and discussion to explore ways participants can develop their own writing skills and encourage those of their students. Good writing requires a disciplined way of thinking and observing. Writing about nature, environmental problems, policy, or inspiring individuals is a way to intellectually connect with ecology and the outdoors and influence public opinion. After an introductory talk about theme, audience, approach, style, and publication, participants will practice their own writing – creativity will be encouraged – and thosewho wish will share with the class for discussion. Writers at all levels, from beginner to professional, should feel comfortable in this workshop. For educators, the goal is to give basic writing tips that they can take back to their students.
