Inspiring Beauty: Connecting Children with Nature
Cynthia Zaferatos*
In this presentation, we will investigate the questions: What is
education? How do we define the environment? What do we mean when we
refer to environmental education? Not only will we use our
intellectual intelligence but we will be encouraged to respond from
an emotional and spiritual perspective as well. Workshop
participants will watch a short film of Cynthia’s 3rd grade students
responding to the same questions and will see examples of how art,
poetry and science are integrated in this class. Native American
values and wisdom about Mother Earth will also be shared.
*Cynthia Zaferatos has been involved with educating, understanding, studying, laughing and discovering with children since 1974. She believes that true education involves the various dimensions of life: the physical, emotional, cognitive, psychological and spiritual and that it is the resposibility of the teacher to help bring forth the fruits of each child. By integrating art, poetry and science, Cynthia encourages an awareness of self, community, nature and cosmos. She currently lives near Seattle, Washington, a city named after the great Native American leader, Chief Sealth, whose words resound with truth, “We are one thread within the web of life. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.” To her, this is the heart of environmental education.
